In the Central Highlands of South Vietnam, Americans intercept North Vietnamese Army units moving in from Cambodia. January 21, 1968. At 5:30 a.m., a shattering barrage of shells, mortars and rockets slam into the Marine base at Khe Sanh. Eighteen Marines are killed instantly, 40 are wounded. The initial attack continues for two days.

43 years ago, in March of 1966, Danny Hernandez and I were serving together in the Marine Corps in Vietnam. We were members of M Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division…the short hand version for that is “Mike 3-1.” I was a 2nd Lieutenant leading a Rifle Platoon in Mike 3-1.

Then I was assigned to go into a specialty so I was sent to the artillery school in Fort Sill, Oklahoma for another 3 or 4 months. From there I went to the Fleet Marine Force in the Pacific, which translates to service in the 3rd Marine division in Okinawa and the 1st Marine division in Vietnam. I arrived in Vietnam in 1970 and served a full tour.
