Their idealistic view of education held sway until the early twentieth century. It was gradually replaced by the pragmatic views of John Dewey (1859-1952). Dewey's masterwork was Democracy and Education, an Introduction to the Philosophy of Education (1916). In it he promoted the view that the student learns by doing rather than by memorizing.
