The key to good soldering is to keep the metal clean, apply plenty of heat for a short period of time and use the right solder and flux, Whilst it is possible (and at times preferable) to use cored solders or electricians solders (which is what you will generally find in a DIY store) you will find it much easier to use proper jewellers or modellers solders.
