General Giap's strategy was to conduct warfare in the interior of South Vietnam in the summer and fall of 1967. The “Border Battles” and the siege of Khe Sanh were very successful in implementing Giap's strategy. By January 1968 a large portion of US forces had been drawn to the interior and northern areas of South Vietnam.

The 269th Combat Aviation Battalion, activated in June of 1966, arrived in the Republic of Vietnam in January of 1967. At approximately the same time, prior to the battalion’s baptism of fire, it had received from the Institute of Heraldry an official crest as a symbol identifying the unit.
