Benzocaine has previously been reported to be an effective topical anesthetising and euthanasing agent for amphibians, for example see Chen and Coombs (1999) and AVMA guidelines (2001). A gel containing 7.5% benzocaine was tested as a euthanasia method for cane toads in the UOW trials, however it showed mixed results with regards to efficacy.
