      The British Army has 43 military bands (23 Regular Army - including 1 Gurkha, and 20 within the TA). In 2010, ECAB endorsed the reduction in the size of bands whilst accepting the need for a review of Army Music– as a temporary expedient as the price for preserving 3 bands that might have been disbanded.

      The music was composed by George Grainger with words by Frank Egerton and was known by The Yorkshire Lass. In 1935 the regiment was granted the secondary title The Duke of York’s Own and co-ensided with the Silver Jubilee of King George V and the 250th anniversary of the raising of the regiment.

      During WW1 British troops marching to the railway station had their own verse when the band was playing this march. This march was reputed to the favourite of King George V. During World War One the 6th Battalion CEF crossed the Atlantic on the SS Lapland, a ship of the Belgian Red Star Lines.

      Holst. Hammersmith is a Prelude and Scherzo which was commissioned by the BBC military band in 1930. Holst afterwards rewrote it for full orchestra. Hammersmith got its name from the Hammersmith district, located in west central London.
