Hyperthyroidism leads to an overall increase in metabolism [257]. On the other hand, if an underactive thyroid releases too little thyroid hormone, it leads to hypothyroidism. When the quantity of hormone released into the blood is below standard, the body utilizes energy more slowly, and chemical activity (metabolism) in the cells decreases [258].
