The garden and gate’s driveway was cleaned and swept for it was bad luck to have an unclean house on Chinese New Year. Over the door there was a large red cloth symbolizing luck (in Chinese culture the color for luck is red), and written on it in bright gold letters were the words, “Gong Xi Fa Chia,” meaning good luck and prosperity.
