Untreated, infections tend to be chronic, even lifelong. H. pylori colonize gastric mucosal (epithelial) cells in the stomach, and duodenum or esophagus only. The organism survives in the mucous layer that coats the epithelium, and causes chronic inflammation of the mucosa. The organism is non-invasive.

A "Meckel's scan" (nuclear medicine scintigraphy) can be done to identify this condition. The radioisotope is taken up by gastric mucosa, so it will typically image the stomach, but if a Meckel's diverticulum is present, the scan will identify the stomach plus an ectopic source of acid secreting gastric mucosa.

A gastric ulcer on the lesser curve showing as an outpouching of barium. Radiating folds can also be seen converging towards the ulcer crater.
