Sir Ernest Rutherford was born in 1871 in New Zealand. Perhaps more than any other scientist, he formed modern-day views about the nature of atoms and matter. Around the year 1898 Rutherford discovered a number of radioactive atoms. Although others had began the earliest research into radioactivity with atoms, Rutherford soon dominated this field.
