This course is a historical survey of some of the major figures and their teachings. It is unusual, if not unique, in that attention is given to nineteenth-century American philosophers.
Contemporary Ethical Theory
Phil 472 is a capstone course, which is meant to examine relatively recent book-length publications on a central topic in one of the major areas of philosophy. This version of Moral Philosophy will consider the possibility of culturally invariant moral values, and examine their relations to contemporary social and political institutions.
