This irreversible reaction is catalysed by two enzymes, glycogen synthase and branching enzyme. Glycogen synthase links glucose residues in series to a glycogen primer by α1-4 glycosidic bonds. At appropriate points (after every ~10 units) branching enzyme links a glucose residue by an α1-6 glycosidic bond introducing a branch point.
