      Gilbert enlisted in 53 Field Battery, 14th Field Brigade RAA (Militia) on 21 March 1938 until 2 June 1940. He transferred to Recruit Reception Depot on 3 June 1940 then on 4 June 1940 to 1 Artillery Reinforcement Regiment. On 17 September 1940 he was transferred to 1 Field Training Regiment and discharged from the CMF 3 February 1941.
