Fosamax patient education handout

    • How long is too long on Fosamax?

Studies show that some women who are at a low risk for fractures may be able to stop taking Fosamax after three to five years and still benefit. This is because the medication accumulates in the body and continues to be effective after treatment has ceased.

    • How long can you take Fosamax?

Fosamax is taken either once daily or once per week. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Take Fosamax first thing in the morning, at least 30 minutes before you eat or drink anything or take any other medicine.

    • Is Fosamax dangerous to take?

Because of how Fosamax works and how it is metabolized by the body, certain people should not take the drug. The drug is known to cause irritation to the gastrointestinal lining and may worsen underlying diseases, including Barrett’s esophagus, dysphagia and gastritis.

    • Is Fosamax too dangerous to use?

Fosamax can cause serious problems in the stomach or esophagus. Stop using this medicine and call your doctor at once if you have chest pain, new or worsening heartburn, or pain when swallowing. In rare cases, this medicine may cause bone loss (osteonecrosis) in the jaw or a broken leg bone called a femur fracture.
