Developments of Gregorian Chant: Organum. Originally, it was monophonic. By about 700AD, a second line was added which, at first, moved in parallel motion to the main melody. Later, this second part was given a musical line of its own. Eventually, the original chant became little more than a bass line and the upper voice became highly ornamental.
