The first settlers of the Alamance neighborhood came about the year 1753, according to the earliest deeds. They purchased lands from Earl Granville in what is now Guilford county, but was then Rowan and Orange, the county line running some miles east of this place.

Stephen Gardner was born in Guilford County, North Carolina, the son of Mary Brooks and Shubal Gardner. Stephen B. Gardner’s sister, Abigail was married to Arza Stroud’s brother, Ure Aston. If Allen Stroud and Stephen Gardner were business partners, or were just friends is unknown, but for the next ten years their lives were intertwined.
