The 565-million-year-old Ediacaran fossils suggest that a set of genes sufficient to produce complex animals existed at least 30 million years before the Cambrian explosion. The Cambrian explosion may have been due in part to new genes (created by gene duplication events) taking on a wide range of new functions in a variety of animal lineages.

This is an extremely short time in the history of the earth. Lesson written by: Pat Tellinghuisen, Program Coordinator of VSVS1998-2018, Vanderbilt University
