Of the available anticonvulsants, the cheapest and most effective in animals is phenobarbital. The dosage in dogs and cats is between 2-4 mg/kg every 12 hours. When treating seizures, it is my experience that it is better to start higher and later reduce the dosage then to use too little, always trying to catch up with the seizure disorder.
