Ileal conduit care at home

    • How is the ileal conduit created?

Creating Your Ileal Conduit After your bladder is removed, your doctor will create a new passage where urine will leave your body. This is called a urostomy. The type of urostomy you will have is called an ileal conduit. Your doctor will use a small piece of your intestine called the ileum to create the ileal conduit.

    • How do you take care of an ileal conduit?

Taking Care of Your Ileal Conduit: An ostomy bag is attached to the skin with an adhesive barrier which is placed over the stoma to catch urine. Open the twist valve or clip found atthe bottom of the ostomy bag to drain the urine. Empty bag at half to two-thirds full to prevent urine leakage and/or detachment of the stoma bag from the skin.

    • How is the ileum attached to the body?

One end of the ileum will be attached to your ureters. The other end will be attached to a small opening in your abdomen called a stoma (see Figure 2). Your doctor will create the stoma during your surgery.
