Johnson suffered a severe stroke in 1951 and died four years later in Jamaica NY on November 17, 1955. He is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Maspeth, Queens NY.

Beginning in 1935, a new style of jazz-inspired music called “swing” transformed American popular music. Initially developed in the late 1920s by black dance bands in New York, Chicago, and Kansas City. The word “swing” (like “jazz,” “blues,” and “rock ’n’ roll”) derives from African American English.
