The statistic of most interest is the journal impact factor, which is the number of times per year the average article in a given journal in recent years (2002, 2003) was cited in all journal articles in the previous year (2004). Impact factors provide only a rough measure of quality of articles in the various journals.

The correlation would presumably be even higher, if the period of citations for the article influence score (5 y) was the same as that of the impact factor (2 y). It follows that for the journals in the exercise and sport disciplines, the article influence score provides little information additional to that provided by the impact factor.

For a discussion of the limitations of the impact factor, see Linde (1998), Nisonger (1994), and Starbuck (1997). The tables below report the impact factor and rank based on impact factor for the top x journals in each discipline, where x is the number of target journals. Blanks indicate that the impact factor was not calculated for that journal.

Journal Impact Factors compare journals using citation data to indicate the most often cited journals in a field and thus having the highest impact [16]. To compare the Morning Report clinical impact set with a standard impact factor, the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Impact Factors were reviewed [17].

The Thomson Scientific journal Impact Factor (IF) [GARFIELD , 1955] is well known for being the document measure of journal impact. IF is often used to rank scientific journals, despite several recognised limitations well summarized by CURTIS and HUNTER [2006], DELAVALLE et al. [2007], DONG et al. [2005], HECHT et al. [1998].
