In 1513 Ponce de Leon landed in La Florida near what would become St. Augustine. The Timucuans came into contact with them. As Spain established a colony there, the Timucuan became laborers or slaves. By 1710 the Timucuans were gone from Florida, dead from the diseases brought by the Spanish and harsh treatment under the Spanish rule.
