Berkeley’s alternative theory of concepts: Locke was right to say that general terms refer to “general ideas” But Locke was wrong to say that general ideas are abstract. Rather, general ideas are particular ideas, but regarded by the mind in a certain way:

Two central planks (apparently) of Locke’s philosophy are the role of ideas – for Locke an idea is ‘whatsoever is the object of the understanding when a man thinks’ (Essay BkI, ch I) – and a representational theory of perception according to which we the immediate objects of perception are not external material bodies but ideas.
