In 1526, a conqueror from central Asia named Babur attacked India. Babur established the Mughal Empire. The name Mughal probably comes from the word Mongol. The Mughal rulers of India were Muslims as well as descendants of the Mongols. The most famous Mughal ruler was Akbar the Great, Babur’s grandson. Akbar ruled the empire from 1556 to 1605.
