Many of these fractures will have a ligamentous injury between the radius and ulna shaft in the forearm, which are termed Essex-Lopresti injuries. Excision of a radial head fracture that has an associated Essex Lopresti injury will cause very significant shortening and wrist morbidity. 3, 4, 5, 9

A nondisplaced, or minimally displaced, distal radius fracture is initially treated with a sugar-tong splint, followed by a short-arm cast for a minimum of three weeks. It should be noted that these fractures may be complicated by a median nerve injury. Isolated midshaft ulna (nightstick) fractures are often caused by a direct blow to the forearm.

Patients used NSAIDs in the first 90 days postoperatively in 900 TS, 694 HS, and 967 SF fractures. In these patients, nonunion rates were 18.9 % in TS fractures, 17.4% in HS fracture and 10.4% in SF fractures. When no NSAIDs were used, the rates were 11.4%, 10.1%, and 4.6% for each respective fracture type.
