The SSF Trustees search the NTSB aviation accident database several times a year to collect accident reports and identify accident trends and probable causes. The SSF trustees started capturing NTSB data in 1981 and have continued to do so annually for the past 35 years.

The Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS) database contains data records for general aviation and commercial air carrier incidents since 1978. The NASDAC database for AIDS contains incidents only because NASDAC uses the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) accident database as the primary source for accident information.

The NTSB IIC will generally post a preliminary aircraft accident report to their Web site within 5 to 7 working days following an accident.
