As a participant in a recent “focus group” for the Northern Area Health Service, I became aware that most discussions concerning the current shortage of nurses have focussed on the methods of marketing nursing as a career choice and working conditions (eg. rostering, family friendly policies, career opportunities and salaries).

The response of 163 non-nursing students were compared to those of 93 nursing students. Findings indicated that the image of nursing as a career choice among non nursing college students correlated with their ideal career at r=0.4072.
