Since the reality of child death did not stop survivors from reaching a ripe old age, something else must explain the small number of elders. When I turned to the census records I found the answer.

The family bible records the death of John Mumma as 21 June 1868, but no location was noted. There are no death dates for the first three children, other than an entry of “died”. The last date entry on the bible page was in 1909 and maybe this was probably their status at that time.

Ohio Census records from 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920 show that after his apprenticeship, Frederick worked as a jeweler for the rest of his life in Xenia, Ohio. He married a younger woman later in life and had one son, Frederic, when he was 52 years old. His death certificate shows he died September 16, 1921 from complications of prostate surgery.
