According to the National Safety Council, hunting is among the safest outdoor activities. In a 15-year period between 1984 and 1999, Montana had 138 hunting related, firearms accidents. In 66 of those accidents, the shots were self inflicted. In the 72 accidents where people were shot by someone else, half were less than 10 yards away.

Over 1.2 million acres of private land were enrolled statewide in the Walk-In Area (WIA) program providing public hunting access by 1,390 cooperators. In 2008, GFP implemented the Controlled Hunting Access Program (CHAP) which provides additional flexibility for the landowner and more control of the number of hunters using the area.
