In advanced cases, the diagnosis of hip or knee arthritis is not difficult. Usually the diagnosis can be made by your doctor with a history and physical exam, combined with appropriate x-rays. In the earlier stages of joint damage, diagnosis may be more difficult. X-rays may be normal and specific physical findings may be lacking.
