Pipe vs tubing sizes chart
What is the difference between pipe size and tube size?
The main difference between pipe and tube is the critical dimension used to describe the pipe size or the tube size. For pipes, internal diameter (ID) roughly corresponds to the nominal pipe size. For tubes, the outer diameter (OD) roughly corresponds to the tube size.
What is the standard size of tubing?
The wall thickness of tubing is measured in inches (.0035″), or by standard gauge from 7 (heaviest) to 22 (lightest) which correspond to a range of wall thicknesses. You can see by the chart at the right, not all 12 Gauge allows a thickness between 0.101 to 0.111.
Is PEX plastic tubing better than copper?
PEX is better than copper piping for several reasons. PEX is a type of polymer tubing that costs much less than copper and is quicker to install. PEX tubing is also more flexible, requires fewer joints, and does not corrode like copper pipe.
Is PEX tubing measured by id or OD?
PEX tubing sizes are denoted by CTS (copper tubing size), not OD (Outside Diameter) or ID (Inside Diameter). OD of PEX, copper and CPVC pipe with the same size (CTS) is the same. This is why push fittings can be used with all of these pipes.

Chart 1 shows the flow rate vs. the velocity for a 0.5” diameter pipe and the friction loss as marks along the curve. For example, a flow of 5 gpm for an 0.5 in pipe diameter has a velocity of 8 ft/s and produces a friction loss of 77 feet per 100 feet of pipe. That friction loss is high and

The data between them does vary. In the chart to the left is a general guideline for how much liquid a pipe of specific size can flow in GPM (Gallons Per Minute) & GPH (Gallons Per Hour.) There are three columns. (Well there are really six, but each colum is shown in Gallons per minute, and then again as Gallons per Hour.)

Primary difference between round tubing and pipe is in outside dimensions. Pipe sizes are normally indicated by use of nominal pipe size designator and weight class or schedule number; for tubing, OD and wall thickness are used. See "Pipe vs. Round Tube" Article in the Evaluations in Section 055213 "Pipe and Tube Railings."
