The Total Stations are high-precision laser theodolites, a standard surveying tool which uses a laser to measure distances from the instrument to a reflector mirror on a rod very accurately. The instrument then uses a computer to calculate the angles and convert the straight-line distances into X-Y-Z coordinates (usually in meters).
