In a recently described technique, bone chips were used to augment hamstring tendon graft in tunnels to promote bone tendon healing and prevent fibrous union and tunnel enlargement.

Apr 23, 2004 · Pain, when kneeling, at the site where the tendon graft was taken from the patellar tendon or at the site on the lower leg bone (tibia) where a hamstring or patellar tendon graft is attached. Repeat injury to the graft (just like the original ligament). Repeat surgery is more complicated and less successful than the first surgery.

The tibia was sectioned 160 mm from the joint line and the soft tissue resected from the distal 60 mm. The fibula was transfixed to the tibia with a tri-cortical screw. A longitudinal lateral incision was made from Gerdy’s tubercle to the proximal skin edge and the superficial fat was reflected to expose the ITB.

The goal of this original technique is to obtain bone union, by mixing propitious biological environment with the vascularized bone graft, and the intramedullary rod is responsible for stability. The intramedullary rod offers good tibial alignment and prevents refracture. Hypertrophy and vitality of the bone graft promote bone union.
