Alkalinity is a measure of the ability of the water to absorb acids (or bases) without changing the hydrogen ion concentration (pH). It is, in effect, a chemical sponge. In most Michigan lakes, alkalinity is due to the presence of carbonates and bicarbonates which were introduced into the lake from ground water or streams which flow into the lake.

Alkalinity. Treatment. For pressures below 20 bar dissolved O2 in the feed does not cause any serious problems so long as the water is kept alkaline However cold feed should be avoided as this introduces large amounts of dissolved O2 are present, for pressures greater than 18.5 bar a dearator is recommended Feed Treatment Chemicals. Sodium ...

Jan 10, 2016 · All of the field measurements confirmed the oxidation of ferrous iron in situ. The pH and alkalinity dropped and the DO and ORP increased. These data are believed to represent equilibrium conditions in the mine. Changes in DO and pH at the sampling well were observed in less than 1 hour following a change in hydrogen peroxide dose. The pH scale indicates acidity and basicity (alkalinity) of a solution. a. pH is the measurement of free hydrogen ions, expressed as a negative logarithm of the H+ concentration ( log [H+]). b. pH values range from 0 (1 x 100 moles/liter; most acidic) to 14 (1 x 10-14 moles/liter; most basic).

I base this statement partly on the fact that many reef aquaria operate quite effectively in the pH 7.8 to 8.0 range, and that most of the best examples of these types of aquaria incorporate calcium carbonate/carbon dioxide reactors which, while tending to lower the pH, keep the carbonate alkalinity fairly high (at or above 3 meq/L.).

A pH level of 7.0 to 7.6 is desirable. Trout will survive outside this pH range, but high pH increases ammonia toxicity. A lower pH will also cause a slowing down of bacteria reproduction. Below a pH value of 5.5 nitrification ceases. Do not use solutions or additives that are sold to raise or lower pH without consulting a TIC volunteer.
