Rules for adding and subtracting radicals

    • How do you subtract radicals?

To add or subtract radicals, the indices and what is inside the radical (called the radicand) must be exactly the same. If the indices and radicands are the same, then add or subtract the terms in front of each like radical. If the indices or radicands are not the same, then you can not add or subtract the radicals.

    • What are radical rules?

To multiply or divide two radicals, the radicals must have the same index number. The product rule dictates that the multiplication of two radicals simply multiplies the values within and places the answer within the same type of radical, simplifying if possible.

    • Can you add radicals together?

Just as with "regular" numbers, square roots can be added together. But you might not be able to simplify the addition all the way down to one number. Just as "you can't add apples and oranges", so also you cannot combine "unlike" radical terms.

    • How to add radical expressions?

The steps in adding and subtracting Radical are: Step 1. Simplify radicals. If you don't know how to simplify radicals go to Simplifying Radical Expressions Step 2. Combine like radicals. More ...
