      The entire moon is in shadow. A waxing crescent moon appears when sunlight shines on a thin crescent on the right side of the Moon. Next is the first quarter moon, which occurs when the moon moves ¼ of the way around the Earth and the right half of the Moon is lit. The waxing gibbous moon is next, which means more than half of the right side is lit.
