A very complicated question, but here is my short capsule history of South Africa (those who know, correct me if I am wrong!). Originally populated by elephants, lions and nomadic black hunters, the first whites to settle in South Africa were in a colony of highly religious and independent-minded Dutchmen at Cape Town in the late 1600's.
