At times, the pain begins in one pole and then spreads rapidly to involve the rest of the gland ("creeping thyroiditis"). Pain may radiate to the jaw or the ears. Malaise, fatigue, myalgia and arthralgia are common. A mild to moderate fever is expected, and at times a high, swinging fever with temperatures above 104°F (40.0°C).

An area of blue-gray discoloration behind the ear lobe overlying the mastoid region is suggestive of a basilar skull fracture (Battle’s sign). Not any more but I used to have pains around the area of my ear and my jaw used to be very sensitive (probably because there was not too much fat left there). According to the Chinese doctor, the left side of my tongue shows less "fat" as the other side. There is a disbalance there as well.
