Projects Gnome and Sedan were a series of underground detonations carried out at Nevada Test Site between 1961-64, which that succeeded in excavating craters of up to 2.4 million cubic yards volume. The first Sedan test in July 1962 used a 100 kiloton warhead detonated from depth of 635 feet, creating a crater 320 feet deep (Figure 7).
