      Go to an antique refinisher, and use what they use on old veneer work. Work it off with course steel wool. Then bleach the wood, this will remove any water stains, dirt and the old oxidized wood, and bring it back to life. Polish the wood with brass wool, not steel, it has oil in it and will block the stain from absorbing evenly.
