The first cruiser named Astoria had been sunk at the Battle of Savo Island in August of 1942. Samuel Eliot Morison, the famous naval historian, said that this battle (in which four U.S. cruisers were sunk and numerous other ships were damaged) was probably the worst defeat ever inflicted on the United States Navy in a “fair fight.”
