We had to learn to count in Japanese. “Bangoo” in Japanese means “count off.” It was easy after one learned to count to ten: Ichi (1), ni (2), san (3), shi (4), go (5), roku (6), shichi (7), hachi (8), ku (9), ju (10), juichi (11), juni (12), jusan (13). Ni is 2 and ju is 10 so niju is 20, sanju is 30, sanjuichi is 31, etc.
