The GIWW is part of a national system of waterways that extends along the US coast. It originated in the federal 1873 Rivers and Harbors Act that called for detailed surveys of the Texas coast. Construction of the GIWW began in 1905 when canals were dredged to a depth of 5 ft (1.5 m) and a width of 40 ft (12 m) along some parts of the Gulf Coast.
