What is hyperkalemia disease

    • NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR CLINICAL EXCELLENCE

Hyperkalaemia usually occurs in people with impaired kidney function which may be caused by acute kidney injury or chronic kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease is prevalent among people with diabetes or chronic heart failure. Hyperkalaemia is common among people with end-stage renal disease and in older people.

Patients with Addison’s disease often present with hyponatriemia and hyperkalemia due to an inability to produce mineralocorticoids such as aldosterone. Why might a lack of aldosterone lead to hyperkalemia? Do you think the hyperkalemia would get progressively more severe or would the plasma K concentration reach a new steady state?

Pseudohyponatraemia is a common cause when there is an isolated rise in K or unexpected potassium result, especially where there are no ECG changes, symptoms or kidney disease. • Discuss with the lab if uncertain but causes are listed below. •An urgent repeat should be arranged when K >6.0mmol/L

Hyperkalemia - ability to maintain K+ excretion at near normal levels is generally maintained in patients with renal disease as long as both aldosterone secretion and distal flow are maintained. Hyperkalemia generally develops in the patient who is oliguric or who has an additional problem, such as a high K+ diet and increased tissue breakdown.
