Belgium’s control of the Belgium Congo Sparked interest from the rest of Europe to claim land in Africa. Britain, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain would soon claim land in Africa ... National pride and economic competition were two reasons why countries wanted to colonize. Europeans viewed an empire as a measure of national greatness.
