COMMUNICATING OUR FEELINGS Helps the couple become aware of the difference between ordinary conversation and intimate communication in marriage. Encourages them to begin identifying and describing their feelings to one another through dialogue. ENCOUNTER WITH SELF Helps each participant take a realistic look at the way they try to present themselves to others. Helps each person to get in touch with their self-doubts and how these self-doubts can limit their relationships. MARRIAGE IN TODAYS WORLD Helps to identify loneliness in relationships and that periods of disillusionment are normal. Even when disillusioned one can still make a decision to love. LISTENING Helps the couples recognize the difference between listening with the mind and listening with the heart. AREAS FOR REACHING OUT TO EACH OTHER Helps couples become aware that sensitive areas of their lives can be opened to one another and, rather than rejecting one another or taking each other for granted, they can accept their spouse with their feelings. GODS DESIRE FOR MARRIAGE Helps couples become aware that their deepest longing, as wife and husband, is to live in a loving relationship. They discover that God also wants them to live intimately and responsibly. RISKING TO TRUST IN DIALOGUE Encourages each participant to face their fears, go beyond them and place trust in their spouse, by the belief in the love and caring their spouse has for them. IMPACT OF DIALOGUE IN OUR DAILY LIVES An invitation to consider using the tool of dialogue for the rest of their lives. MARRIAGE AS COVENANT Presents the marriage relationship as covenantal and what that means for the Church. KEEPING OUR RELATIONSHIP A PRIORITY Assures the couple that it is possible to make their dreams come true if they keep their relationship a priority and that living passionately in love will benefit themselves, the Church and the world. SHARING IN THE DREAM Encourages the couple to share themselves personally and financially in the Marriage Encounter dream to change the world. CONTINUING OUR JOURNEY Encourages the couple to make this weekend experience a way of life by sharing their love and journeying with other couples who share their values. What other Clergy have said about Marriage Encounter Ann and I believed we had a good and solid marriage which God used as a witness to His glory. At the same time we were aware that the stress and demands of ministry often prevented us from experiencing much time together there was hardly any time nor energy left over for ourselveswe regret we did not know about Marriage Encounter many years sooner; however, were grateful that we went on our weekend 8 years ago. May I urge you to seriously think and pray about giving yourselves the gift of a weekend? My wife and I have attended two different Marriage Encounter weekends a couple of years apart. We are glad that we have done so, for we now understand better how it is that a number of our parishioners have had such enriching breakthroughs in marriage communication as a result of the weekend. We have found that the structure has opened up marriages to new possibilities for dialogue and concern as people share most intimate thoughts only with their spouseThe bottom line is that this experience under the leadership of Jesus Christ seeks to strengthen one of the most important institutions in our society, the covenant of marriageWe highly recommend for other clergy to attend Our weekend was a real blessing for us. It gave us the time and opportunities to share only with one another. For an entire weekend I was able to concentrate and BE with just my wifeno interruptions, appointments, or other matters to pull me awayBoth of us were able to listen to the other and to focus solely on each others needs, concerns and feelings. Want to show your church what a really GREAT Marriage is? We invite you to a special WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER Jan. 16-18, 2014 FOR CLERGY God gave us marriage as a holy mystery in which a man and a woman are joined together, and become one, just as Christ is one with the church We rejoice that marriage is given by God, blessed by our Lord Jesus Christ and sustained by the Holy Spirit let marriage be held in honor by all. From the Book of Common Worship What is Different about this Marriage Encounter Weekend? This is an interdenominational weekend, presented for Clergy and spouses of any church who wish to deepen their couple love and be strengthened in their commitment to one another and Gods desire for their marriage. It is a weekend whose format is designed to allow a husband and wife time to pause awhile and focus on each other. What Happens on a Weekend? It begins on Thurs. Jan. 16, 2014 at 8 PM and ends about 4:00 PM Saturday afternoon. Its a working weekend, where the couples listen to sessions presented by experienced lay and clergy couples. The sharings are centered on personal experiences and are designed to inspire the couples to look at themselves as individuals, at their marriage relationship, their relationship with God and the world around them. After most of the sessions, attending couples discuss the topic presented in the privacy of their rooms. It is not a marriage clinic or a counseling session. There are no group discussions and couples are not required to disclose any aspect of their marriage to others. The purpose of the Weekend is for a husband and wife to develop a better knowledge, understanding and acceptance of each other through the use of a communication technique that is taught on the weekend. The weekend is presented from an interdenominational perspective. The concepts go beyond the boundaries of any one faith expression or denomination. So who should attend this Weekend? The weekend is designed for happily married couples of any age. All that is needed is a commitment to each other and a more meaningful future together. Couples married from a few months to fifty years have enjoyed the weekend. It is normally suggested that couples married for several years may find it easier to relate to some of the presentations. Persons from any religious faith or background are welcomed. They should understand that the weekend is presented from a Christian perspective. The weekend is open to married couples, as recognized by the Church one man and one woman per the United Methodist Book of Discipline and Worldwide Marriage Encounter licensing agreement with the Roman Catholic Church. Is this Weekend for Troubled Marriages? No. Relationships in serious trouble could benefit from another weekend experience called Retrouvaille (see www.retrouvaille.org or call 1-800-470-2230). What are the results? The National Institute for Family Study reports: The divorce rate for couples attending an ME Weekend is just 2%, vs. the 50% national average. The Weekend experience benefits not only the couple and their marriage, but also has positive effects on family communications and parenting. Less than 15% of the couples rated their marriages as excellent before the Weekend, but nearly 65% did so after the weekend. Who Conducts the Weekend? Lay and clergy couples are presenting this Interdenominational Marriage Encounter Weekend. All have attended previous weekends and are experienced presenters. Presenting couples strive to live in an open and caring relationship, and their personal experiences are shared lovingly and deeply with the attending couples. Quality control is carefully maintained. Presenting couples submit their talks to a Workshop Team. Each presentation is checked for fidelity to the focus of the Weekend and sound doctrine of the Church. All presenting couples volunteer their time and ministry to the Weekends. This Thurs/Sat weekend is for clergy, only. You are assured of complete freedom of ministry responsibilities for this weekend. Whats in it for my Church? Couples returning to the Church after a weekend seem to have a renewed image of themselves, a renewed commitment to God, and a renewed vision of the Church as it reaches out to the community. One measurable benefit is the increased number of couples who feel better equipped to model to their own family and church what it means to live Gods Desire. Whats in it for me personally? Married clergy are not exempt from the stress todays world places on a couples relationship. In addition to the benefits the Weekend can bring to a clergy couples relationship, the opportunity also exists for a meaningful ministry as a couple within Worldwide Marriage Encounter. What is the cost of a Weekend? An initial deposit of $50 is required to ensure a reservation. We work with our facilities to ensure the lowest cost available at discounted rates. Weekend fees cover two nights lodging, five delicious meals, and weekend supplies. The additional fee for the Jan. 16-18, 2014 weekend is $100 per couple, payable to Marriage Encounter United Methodist by Oct. 1st. This lower fee results from the use of a grant to offset some weekend costs. There will be an opportunity for a free-will offering, near the end of the experience. Final deadline for new registrations is Dec. 15th, 2013. How do I find where Weekends are held? The interdenominational clergy weekend will be held Jan. 16-18, 2014 (Thursday night - Saturday) at the beautiful Van Diver Inn Bed and Breakfast in Havre de Grace, MD.
