Respond to questions honestly and candidly. Understand what is asked of you. Feel free to ask for a repeat if you don't clearly understand a question. Avoid the "smart-aleck" reply or the clever-flip demeanor (you know, the effort to be cute, snappy alert, falsely witty). Do your homework on the school and program. Be on time.Look nice. Examine yourself. Know something about the MBA and how it can aid you. Specific Discuss special interests and ask how the school may help you to pursue them. For example, one representative particularly enjoyed talking to a young lady about her interest in fund-raising management. Ask about faculty research and interests, especially in areas that concern you. Review with representatives your work background, highlighting the benefits you received from the experiences. Know something about the MBA degree and what it can do for you. Explore the possibilities of the degree as it relates to what you are seeking. Inquire about the school's philosophy, approach, and direction. Since management education is young, many schools are still defining and redefining themselves in regard to what they do and how they do it. Inquire about facilities (library, computer equipment), housing, and campus life. A recent graduate chose a school based on its tremendous computer laboratory. If financial aid is critical to you, ask about aid sources, its availability, and the name of the person responsible for administering the program. Describe to the representatives who you are: your strengths, assets, traits needing development. Discuss your college work, making special reference to those courses/projects that were valuable, exciting, worthwhile, and important to your future. Be frank about problems real or perceived without rationalizing, apologizing, blaming, or excusing. Common problems may include grades, test scores, an inconsistent record, or minimal work experience. Is there anything else you would like us to know about you ? For every answer : The point (Context, Scope, Purpose) Actions Results What did you gain What did you learn First, congrats on your acceptance to Haas and Sloan. If you have any questions about the SF Bay area, feel free to contact me, I've lived here a long time working in high tech. I'm a round 3 Haas applicant and did not apply to Sloan since they aren't strong in one of the areas I'm interested in (non-profit) so I can't compare the two, but for what it's worth here are some comments: About finding a sense of community: I think a school can foster that through the design of the facilities and its setting. One of the things I like about Haas is that the buildings surround a central courtyard, so youhave a natural gathering place as people criss-cross between buildings. I would probably give Cornell the prize for its glass atrium building. One school I visited had everything housed in a brand new four or five story building and it felt kind of claustophobic to me. Obviously this is just my opinion and people have different tastes. You never know - you may never want to go back east after attending Haas. That's why Berkeley and Stanford don't send as many people to the east coast.People either know they want to stay in California before they applied or fell in love after they arrived. Reputation may be important in getting that first job, but after that, I don't think it makes as much difference. People are more interested in what you've done lately. Ultimately you get out of school what you put into it. Are you going to either school's admit weekend? That would probably clinch the decision for you either way. If you're still on the fence, good luck with the decision, and if you've already decided, congrats again - you get to move on with your life! i've talked to a few MBA's out here who interact with Stanford GSB grads and consider them overrated. some even refer to them as 'over-glorified, BMW-driving trash.' and i've been in the bay area 6 years. Haas seems to have a lot more soul. so to speak, i mean - if a bschool can have such a thing. When you look at Berkeley's app, you see they're really, REALLY looking for personality and character... which i think will translate into an entering class (your would-be peers) that's not only bright (that's a given) but sassy as well. Their app made everyone else's look really bland, so i was strongly drawn to it. That's why I applied to Haas and not Stanford, because I knew that if I got into both, I'd choose Haas anyway Yeah, it was actually. Mostly because I am trying to accomadate my wife's job as a wireless telecom attorney and Boston and Chicago are hoirrible markets for her in telecom law. There is alot more than just the quality and prestige on the school that goes into picking an MBA program. In my case it was: A) Wanted to stay in CA or out west after MBA. B) Wanted my wife to be able to fulfill her career goals (Bay Area location is much better than anywhere else besides Washington DC and maybe Denver) C) Haas saves me a ton of money D) I know people at Haas and feel great about the school and the people. E) Wanted to be closer to my family (they are in San Diego, Seattleand Utah) F) Weather is much better in CA G) Haas is much better in tech and other areas of interest I have When you add it all up. The total situation is better for my wife and I at Haas than it would have been at H/K/Chic. Now if my wife would have been able to land a decetn job in one of those cities then maybe that would change things but it would be a hard sell. Interviewed a couple of days ago. 30 minutes exactly.it wentas follows: -Chit chat about weather etc -Was told that adcomm will make decisions late next week and notifications will be April 15 -Asked to do a Resume walk - with interruptions - why did you do that? Why did you leave that job for the other job? Seems like all Sloan interviews begin with a resume walk or Tell me about yourself. -Tell me about a time that you had to convince someone on a team to do something - how did you do that -Tell me about a time when you did not see eye to eye with someone on a team -One other situational questionthat I am forgetting -Why Sloan specifically -Anything else you'd like to tell me (I think you should always use this in an interview to summarize your case in 60 seconds - it's really their last impression of you in person before committee meets) -My questions Adcom person was very very nice (and professional). We hit a good stride and thought it was my best interview to date (K, S, H, Sloan). Best advice that I read here (and in that compilation that I put together last week) was to have 5 major points that you want to get across in the interview. No matter what happens, you have to make those 5 points and sell yourself. That worked pretty well for me. We'll see in 10 days if Rod and crew agree. Good luck to all My sister is 2000 Haas graduate. If you have program specific questions, she may help. Furthermore, you can visit campus, attend the class, and have lunch with current students. Berkeley's campus is beautiful (some people may prefer Stanford's though). Never been to Ann Arbor so don't know UMBS's campus. The weather in California is much better than Michigan's. However, Haas's class size is smaller soUMBS's alumni network is stronger, I think. However, if you want to work in the West Coast especially in the Bay Area, Haas will be your better choice. Culture at Haas ismore casual and Michigan's is more competitive. In terms of finance, Haas is a little better than UMBS, but in terms of general management, UMBS is better than Haas. You may like to review US News ranking at HYPERLINK "http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/beyond/bcbiz.htm" http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/beyond/bcbiz.htm Per my understanding, Haas admits some students without interview.Good luck and tell us your good news! I am a round 1 admitwho alsohad an on-campus interview. I've posted some tips on this forum already (the RD 1 thread), but my best tip is still visit theHaas campus beforehand (class visit, lunch w/ students, info session). Make friends with the HSA students as mostly likely one of them will be your interviewer. Myinterview waskind ofa relaxed chatintervened with typical questions of why Haas, why MBA, goals, etc. The interviewer will only have access to your resume, so don't worry about the small details of your application. Get enthusiastic about the Haas co-operative environment and prepare lots of questions about Haas. Visit Haas! Best wishes. I was accepted without an interview Berkeley does not interview too many so do not expect one...if you do get one - it truly means you are on the bubble...could go either way From a friend at Haas...often the interview is used to determine whether you will FIT into Berkeley's culture In interview, be open about differences, emphasize COLLABORATION, teamwork etc...
