Content includes: basic anatomy and directional terminology, structure and function of body systems and special senses, fundamental concepts and principles of body organization, histology, and hematology. Purpose: The Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology course provides a knowledge base that is essential to students interested in various health-related fields. Because this knowledge base is constantly increasing in volume and complexity, a high school course can offer students the opportunity to be better prepared for educational routes beyond high school. Course Enduring Learnings: The student will understand that: Anatomy describes the form and organization of anatomical parts, while physiology considers the function of anatomical parts. The structure or anatomy of body parts and organs determines what they are able to do and how they can function. Characteristics of life are traits all organisms share. The body is composed of parts with different levels of organization. The body systems are dependent on each other to survive and operate the human body. Lifestyle choices effect the functioning of the systems of our body. Terms with precise meaning helps investigators communicate effectively. Course Essential Questions: How does a body function? Are the body systems interdependent, independent? Is one system more important than the others? What effects are there upon the body systems when subject to less than optimal quantity and quality of its basic environment requirements? What functions are necessary for an organism to maintain life? Is understanding the organization of your body essential to making informed lifestyle choices? How do our actions influence our systems? What is the importance of having a frame of reference when studying anatomy and physiology?
