LEVEL OF TRAINEE: R4 ASSESSMENT: Monitoring of the accomplishment of the stated objectives will be performed using the following methods: 1. Global Rating: end of rotation evaluation of resident performance to assess the residents demonstration of Core Competencies with respect to the stated objectives by faculty, other team resident members, students, and nursing staff. 2. Case Logs: auditing of operative cases pertinent to the specialty in the Surgical Operative Log. 3. Written Examination: performance on the annual ABSITE examination. DESCRIPTION OF THE ROTATION: The resident spends a one-month rotation working on the gastroenterology consult team and in the surgical endoscopy suite/procedure rooms with members of the full-time Digestive Diseases faculty at UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica. The resident will be a fully integrated member of the team working under the direction of gastroenterology fellows and attendings, see consults which are to be supervised by the Digestive Diseases attending, and learn endoscopy under the supervision of those attendings. COMPETENCY BASED LEARNING OBJECTIVES Medical Knowledge: 1. Learns the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of common gastrointestinal problems on the inpatient consult service 2. Knows indications and contraindications for common GI procedures such as upper and lower endoscopy 3. Knows utility of procedure for a given condition 4. Considers potential findings before starting procedure Uses experts for complex cases UCLA General Surgery Residency Program Rotation Educational Policy Goals and Objectives Patient Care: 1. Completes thorough histories and physicals, and explains risks and benefits of procedure to patient/family 2. Ensures understanding by patient/family 3. Reviews potential diagnostic findings before procedure 4. Informs patients/families about procedure findings 5. Provides timely follow up of pathology results to patients/families 6. Ensures appropriate follow up after procedure PRACTICE BASED LEARNING: 1. Utilize current literature resources to obtain up-to-date in information in the indications and techniques of gastrointestinal endoscopy and practice evidence-based medicine. 2. Participate in GI teaching and management conferences. Professionalism: 1. Practice compassionate patient care maintaining the highest moral and ethical values with a professional attitude. 2. Demonstrate understanding of the needs and feelings of others, including the patient's family members, allied health care personnel (nurses, clerical staff, etc.), gastroenterology fellows, fellow residents, and medical students. 3. Communicate and collaborate effectively in a team of health care providers 4. Demonstrate respect, compassion and integrity in the care of patients on a daily basis 5. Demonstrate mature and educated approach to ethical issues commonly encountered in a gastroenterology setting. 6. Show sensitivity to patients culture, age, gender and disabilities 7. Create and sustain a therapeutic and ethically sound relationship with patients and patient families 2. Maintain professional interactions with other health care providers and hospital staff Systems Based Practice: 1. Understand how the managed health care organization affects gastroenterology especially within the confines of the UCLA health system. 2. Demonstrate cost effective health care 3. Follow established practices, procedures, and policies of the Department of Surgery and integrated and affiliated hospitals. 5.
