Ron McManus True leadership is not ___Dependent____________ upon conferred authority, titles, positions or fame. Positions do not make leaders, leaders make positions. True leadership can occur whenever a _____Need_______ emerges that sparks passion within someone. True leadership may take on a __Variety__ of methods, styles and appearances because the outcome is what is most important to them. True leadership works toward a _______Breakthrough______ of impact or achievement. True leadership occurs when one acts upon their ____Vision_____ of a preferred future, and mobilizes others to join in the cause. Managers- take what is there and organizes it. Leaders take what is not there and bring it into reality. Three Common Threads There are three common threads we find woven throughout all of the great leaders in history. These can be divided into three actions and three atmospheres THREE ACTIONS 1.___Cast Vision____ (Leaders possess and communicate a picture of a goal for others.) 2.___Implement Strategy____ (Leaders understand and implement the steps to reach the goal.) 3.__Empower People _____ (Leaders mobilize and equip people to join them in the cause.) THREE ATMOSPHERES. 1. _Sense of Destiny__ (They have a picture of what they want and feel destined to fulfill it.) 2. _Sense of Family__ (The atmosphere is one of support/belonging; none feel alone in the task.) 3. _Militant Spirit__ (They possess a resolve to get it done whatever the cost or sacrifice.) The Leadership Equation. While leadership is no doubt a personal art form, it is also a science. Every artist is unique, but we can still observe the resources they have on hand that enable them to create: the paint, the palette, the canvas, the brushes, the palette knife, etc. These are the definable elements in the equation. Further, just as there are primary colors the artist uses (red, yellow, blue), so there are primary colors that make up a healthy, effective leader. The greatest masterpieces in the world all began with a few simple primary colors. Lets look at the primary colors of leadership below. The Formula for Healthy Effective Leadership HEALTHY _Character_ + _Perspective__ + __Courage__ + __Favor__= EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP These qualities include the following defining terms: CHARACTER PERSPECTIVE COURAGE FAVOR (Infrastructure) (Insight) (Initiative) (Influence) 1. The leaders backbone 1. The leaders mind 1. The leaders will 1. The leaders heart 2. Discipline/responsibility 2. Vision/faith 2. Commitment/risk 2. People skill/charisma 3. Inward strength 3. Inward sight 3. Inward spirit 3. Inward savvy/skill 4. Enables to stand up 4. Enables to see ahead 4. Enables to step out. 4. Enables to sour above. Lets take a closer look at each of these 4 areas of effective leadership. I. Character: Enables the leader to do what is ___RIGHT____ even when it is difficult. Character is the foundation on which the leaders life is built. It all begins with character because leadership operates on the basis of trust. J.R. Miller wrote: The only thing that walks back from the tomb with the mourners and refuses to be buried is the character of a man. What a man is survives him. It cant be buried. 1. Character communicates ___CREDIBILITY____ 3. Character creates ___CONSISTENCY____ 2. Character harnesses__ __RESPECT____ 4. Character earns ____TRUST____ ISSUES INCLUDE A. Developing personal discipline. B. Developing personal security and identity. C. Developing personal convictions, values, and ethics. General H. Norman Schwarskopf once said, Leadership is a potent combination of strategy and character. But, if you must be without one, be without strategy. YOU ARE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGE. YOU TALK TO YOURSELF MORE THAN YOU TALK TO ANYONE. STEPS TO DEVELOP CHARACTER Discipline yourself to do two things you dont like every week. Fix your eyes on a clear, specific purpose. Learn the whys behind Gods commands. Interview a leader who has integrity: how did they build it into their life? Write out the promises youve made: take responsibility for all your actions and emotions. Adjust and monitor your motives for why you do what you do. Illustration: Sailboat---Wont capsize as long as more weight is below the waterline. Building weight below the water line is our challenge as leaders. Integrity. Reflect and Respond What is one character strength you have? What are your weak points? II. Perspective: Enables a leader to ____See_____ and ____Understand__ what must happen to reach the target. Jesus began His training of the twelve by working on their perspective. He worked on their vision and how they saw life. He knew if He could get them to think differently, He could get them to act differently. Dr. Robert Clinton said, The primary difference between a follower and a leader is perspective. The primary difference between a leader and an effective leader is better perspective. LEADERS SEE THE BIG PICTURE & THE LITTLE PROCESS THEY FIRST CHOOSE THEIR ____VISION_______ (What is the goal?) THEN THEY CHOOSE THEIR _____VENUE__________(What is the strategy to reach it?) FINALLY, THEY CHOOSE THEIR ___VEHICLES___ (What systems to use to move ahead?) ISSUES INCLUDE A. Building and casting vision. B. Understanding reality beyond and before the people. C. Discerning the process and people needed to reach the goal. STEPS TO DEVELOP PERSPECTIVE 1. Watch the news and read the newspaper and ask: What could be done to solve these problems? 2. Groom the optimist in you: read and listen to positive books and tapes. 3. Write out your dreams: what would you attempt to do if you did not fear failure? 4. Interview a visionary leader: how do they think? How do they perceive things? 5. Identify one burden youve embraced. Set some goals to address it. 6. Post photos, pictures and quotes that represent your goals and dreams in your room. Reflect and Respond Write about your vision. How will you complete it?  III. Courage: Enables the leader to __INITIATE__ and take the risk to step out toward a goal. With only character and perspective, a leader may still lack action. Only courage enables a leader to step out. The only measure of what you believe is what you do. If you want to know what people believe, dont read what they write, dont ask what they think, just observe what they do. Life shrinks or expands in proportion to ones courage. Courage is the first of human qualities because it is the one which guarantees all others. Winston Churchill Courage is ___CONTAGIOUS___. Courage is initiating and doing what you are ___AFRAID___ of doing. Courage is the power to let go of the __FAMILIAR___. Courage is __VISION___ in action. Courage takes the ___RISK___ and seizes what is essential for growth. ISSUES INCLUDE. Making and keeping commitments. Building the capacity to take risks. Lobbying for a breakthrough in a cause. STEPS TO DEVELOP COURAGE 1. Attempt something each week that you couldnt possibly complete without God. 2. Invite accountability over the commitments and decisions youve made. 3. Give an all-out commitment to a good habit for a set time. 4. Interview a courageous person: what gives them their courage? 5. Do the thing you fear the most and the death of fear is certain. 6. Force yourself to be a decision-maker and a responsibility-taker. Reflect and Respond Where could you use courage right now? What will you do to develop it?  IV. Favor: Enables the leader to ATTRACT and EMPOWER others to join them in the cause. Finally, a leader must display the relational skills to mobilize people. Without favor, a person may still fail to take anyone with them to the goal. A leader has a compass in their head and a magnet in their heart. Some of the key concepts a leader must embrace are: Communication-Leaders must develop listening skills & the ability to share ideas convincingly. Motivation-Leaders must mobilize others for mutual benefit & empowerment. Delegation-Leaders must share their authority, responsibility and ownership of the vision. Confrontation-Leaders must have backbone and be able to resolve relational differences. Reproduction-Leaders must be able to equip & train a team of people to accomplish the goal. WORD PICTURES THE ___HOST____: You are to host the conversations and relationships of your life. THE __DOCTOR__ : You are to inquire inductively about others interests, with questions. THE COUNSELOR : You are to be an active listener, validating the other person. THE TOUR GUIDE : You are to lead them through a process and toward a destination. ISSUES INCLUDE: A. Building personal charisma B. Building people skills C. Communication, motivation, delegation and confrontation YOU WILL ACCOMPLISH MORE BY SPENDING TWO DAYS GETTING TO KNOW SOMEONE ELSE RATHER THAN SPENDING TWO WEEKS TRYING TO GET THEM TO KNOW YOU. STEPS TO DEVELOP FAVOR Learn to host relationships and conversations you engage in. Determine to be others-centered; focus on their needs not yours. Become a good finder-find one good quality in others and affirm it. Make deposits in the lives of people: encouragement, good books, tapes, contacts, etc. Identify the strengths in people and help them find a place to employ those strengths. Interview a people-person: how did they develop their charisma? You cant make withdrawals from people without having made deposits in them. Its all about relationships. Reflect and Respond What is one way for you to both gain and increase the favor that you have now? WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM MISSING A QUALITY? The leader must have all FOUR in order to perform at the optimal level, over the long haul. Even when we look through the pages of scripture, we see this truth verified. Notice what you get when one component is missing from the equation. PERSPECTIVE & COURAGE & FAVOR MINUS CHARACTER= SAMSON (Samson failed miserable because he didnt develop character. He knew right from wrong, certainly possessed courage, and at times favor/influence--but never mastered character.) CHARACTER & PERSPECTIVE & FAVOR MINUS COURAGE= PILATE (Even if he possessed character, Pilate failed miserably, despite his right perspective and power with people due to lack of courage to do what was right and risky.) CHARACTER & COURAGE & FAVOR MINUS PERSPECTIVE= SIMON PETER (Peter displayed character and courage numerous times during Jesus ministry, and seemed to have favor with his colleagues--but clearly experienced gaps in his perspective.) CHARACTER & PERSPECTIVE & COURAGE MINUS FAVOR= JOSHUA & CALEB (Caleb and Joshua came back from spying out the land with great perspective and courage, but did not have influence/favor with the people to move them forward.) TOXIC LEADERS Leaders like Nero, Adolf Hitler, and Joseph Stalin were destined to sabotage themselves. Nero possessed an enlarged ego that choked out his perspective. Hitlers lack of character choked out his perspective and favor. Stalins character was so absent that he lost all favor with people and never got it back. These leaders impact ended up being negative and short lived. They did not possess all the qualities of whole and healthy leaders.
